Susan Symington, Chair

Susan was appointed as chair of York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in April 2015.

As chair, Susan leads both the Board of Directors and the Governors’ Council and is the Trust’s lead representative within the local community.  Susan ensures high standards of probity and governance and that the Trust remains within its Terms of Authorisation.

Prior to being chair, Susan was a non-executive director and vice chair of Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust, and since 2013 she has been a non-executive director for the Beverley Building Society.

Susan has had an extensive and distinguished career in the human resources sector where she has held a number of senior positions, including human resources director for Bettys and Taylors of Harrogate.  More recently Susan has been undertaken a number key consultancy contracts in support of a number of private and public sector organisations.

Sue is a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD and a Chartered Director with the Institute of Directors, who have previously awarded her Chartered Director of the Year.

Mike Proctor, current Chief Executive

Mike was appointed as chief executive of York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in May 2018. 

As chief executive, Mike is the statutory accountable officer and is a full voting member of the Board.  He is responsible for the overall management of the Trust and its performance in terms of service provision, financial and corporate viability, as well as ensuring that the Trust meets all its statutory and service obligations.  Mike is also responsible for modernising local services and working closely with other partner organisations to deliver whole system reform.

Mike started his career in the NHS in 1975 and went on to undertake nurse training from 1982 to 1985.  Subsequently he worked in a variety of clinical roles at the Royal Hallamshire and Northern General hospitals in Sheffield.  He came to work in York in 1993 as clinical nurse specialist for critical care and subsequently worked in a number of nursing and business roles in York, before being appointed as director of nursing in 1998.

From 2005 onwards Mike held a number of senior executive roles including chief operating officer, before taking up appointment as deputy chief executive for York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in 2007.  In 2012 he became interim chief executive for Scarborough and North East Yorkshire until the acquisition of that organisation by York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust was completed in 2013.  He has remained with the Trust as deputy chief executive until his appointment earlier this year as chief executive.

Andrew Bertram, Finance Director

Andrew was appointed as finance director for York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in January 2009. 

As finance director, Andrew is responsible for providing strategic financial leadership and advice.  Andrew has a key role to play to ensure effective professional input to the definition and development of the Trust’s overall strategic vision and direction and the day-to-day managerial decision making process.  He advises the Board and chief executive on matters of financial governance and probity and ensures the highest standards of financial governance and management in line with best practice.

Andrew joined the NHS in 1991 as a finance trainee at York as part of the NHS graduate management training scheme.  Upon qualifying as an accountant, he undertook a number of financial roles supporting many of the Trust's clinical teams and later became directorate manager for medicine for a short time.

Andrew left the Trust in 2005 to take up the role of deputy finance director at Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust.  He subsequently returned to York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in 2009 as finance director.

James Taylor, Medical Director

James was appointed as medical director for York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in October 2015.

As medical director James is responsible for the appointment, development and professional leadership of medical and dental staff.  James acts as the Caldicott Guardian for the Trust and is responsible for medical leadership including professional standards, appraisal and revalidation, and appointments.  He also has responsibility for patient safety, clinical audit, prescribing, clinical risk and medico legal.

James graduated with a dental degree from Glasgow University in 1983.  He then worked in posts in Bristol, Manchester and greater London before re-entering medical school and graduating from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical school in 1993.  Following spells at Kings, East Grinstead and Guildford hospitals he graduated obtaining a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in August 2000.

In 2001, James assumed the role of consultant maxillofacial surgeon with the Trust, initially specialising in Head and Neck cancer surgery but continuing to practise most of his surgical training.  James subsequently worked in a variety of lead and clinical director posts and was appointed deputy medical director in 2014, where he remained until his appointment as medical director in 2015.

Beverley Geary, Chief Nurse

Beverley was appointed as chief nurse for York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in October 2014.

As chief nurse, Beverley is responsible for the overall development and leadership of the nursing, patient experience and infection control and prevention across the Trust.  She is responsible for setting a strategy that creates a compassionate, skilled and flexible workforce that is able to deliver the highest level of compassionate care.  Beverley is also the lead for patient experience and, as such, is responsible for embedding safe processes and practices and a learning culture across the Trust.

Beverley started her nursing career in the acute sector; training as a registered nurse in 1987 and working in cardiology and acute medicine, before undertaking a post basic programme in mental health.

Throughout her career, Beverley has worked in a number of hospitals around the region and worked in a variety of clinical and educational roles before returning to full time clinical practice in 2001.

Wendy Scott, Chief Operating Officer

Wendy was appointed as director of out of hospital care in October 2015 and chief operating officer in September 2017 for York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, combining both hospital and community portfolios.

As chief operating officer, Wendy provides strategic leadership to operational teams and is instrumental in driving and leading improvements in clinical care and performance across the Trust.

Wendy has worked in the NHS for 32 years, starting her career as a registered general nurse, holding a number of positions before moving into general management.  She subsequently worked in a variety of roles relating to commissioning, performance and operational management before joining the Trust in July 2012, managing community services across Scarborough, Ryedale, Whitby, York and Selby.

Polly McMeekin, Acting Director of Workforce and Organisational Development

Polly was made Acting Director of Workforce and Organisational Development in June 2018.

She joined the Trust in September 2015 as Deputy Director of Workforce reporting into the Chief Executive. Her portfolio includes Human Resources; Organisational Development; Corporate Learning and Equality and Diversity.

After Graduating from Durham University in 2000; Polly began her career in Financial Services. In 2002 she joined the NHS working for Great Ormond Street Hospital where she trained in Human Resource Management. Polly joined Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust in 2009 and progressed to Deputy Director of Workforce and Organisational Development before she left in 2015.

Polly is a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD.

Lucy Brown, Acting Director of Communications 

Lucy became Acting Director of Communications in June 2018.

Lucy joined the Trust in July 2008 as Communications Service Manager, establishing the Trust’s first in-house communications function. She was appointed Head of Communications in 2011, reporting into the Chief Executive. Lucy’s portfolio includes media relations and PR, internal communications, stakeholder engagement and charity fundraising.

After Graduating from The University of Sheffield in 2002, Lucy joined the press office at Tees, East and North Yorkshire Ambulance Service (now Yorkshire Ambulance Service). She joined NHS Employers in 2005, holding a number of communications roles before becoming Senior Communications Manager.

Brian Golding, Director of Estates and Facilities

Brian was appointed as director of Estates and Facilities for York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in January 2009.

As director of estates and facilities, Brian is responsible for strategic master planning and implementation; estate maintenance and management; health & safety; the strategic implementation of sustainable projects; and delivery of the Trust’s alternative delivery model.

Brian is a chartered engineer with over 30 years’ experience delivering complex public sector projects.  He started his career as a design engineer with the Property Services Agency and having progressed into project management spent five years on the Trident Submarine shore facilities in Scotland.  After a brief spell in Saudi Arabia, commissioning hardened aircraft shelters, Brian returned to the UK and joined the NHS at Guy’s & St. Thomas’ where he managed a range of projects rationalising services across the two sites.

In 2000 Brian was appointed Project Director for Edgware Community Hospital and in 2003 he moved to York Hospital, where he was initially responsible for capital investment, before later being appointed as director.

Professor Dianne Willcocks, Senior Independent Director

Dianne was appointed as a non-executive director in 2010 for York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Dianne brings 30 years' experience of change management and modernisation in higher education, and is a passionate advocate for socially inclusive public services.  Her research background is in social gerontology.

Michael Sweet, Non-Executive Director

Michael was appointed as a non-executive director in 2008 for York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Michael’s appointment follows a long and successful career in the commercial sector.  He brings experience in operational management, customer relations and business development.

Michael Keaney, Non-Executive Director

Michael was appointed as a non-executive director of York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in 2012.

Michael brings over 40 years’ experience in the private sector, primarily in manufacturing.  He is an experienced director with a successful record in business improvement and transformation.

Jennie was appointed as a non-executive director of York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in 2012.

Jennie has a degree in economics and spent her early career in investment management with Abbey Life and Aviva.  Jennie, who has lived in Scarborough for the last 20 years, is currently a director of Finance Yorkshire Ltd. - a £120m fund investing in small and medium sized businesses in the Yorkshire and Humber region.

Jenny McAleese, Non-Executive Director

Jenny was appointed as a non-executive director of York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in 2017.

Jenny is a qualified chartered accountant and brings over 30 years’ experience gained of the private, public and charitable sectors.  From 1997 until her retirement in October 2016 she was chief executive at The Retreat psychiatric hospital in York. She also has extensive non-executive experience.

Lorraine Boyd, Non-Executive Director

Lorraine was appointed as a non-executive director of York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in 2018.

Lorraine is a GP and brings 30 years’ of experience of direct patient care.

In recent years Lorraine has been involved as GP representative within NHS Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Group and The Humber, Coast and Vale Sustainability and Transformation Partnership.  She is the founder directory of City and Vale GP Alliance and she has supported the development of collaborative working between the Trust and primary care.
